What Is More Southern Than FRIED GREEN TOMATOES?

The tomatoes in our garden are thriving.  OK...the plants are hanging over with tomatoes we have so many.  We planted both the small cherry tomatoes and also large ones.  While we have been picking the small ones for a while (and popping them in our mouths to eat them; they have never made it to a salad yet...), all of the large ones are still not ripe.  So as I was out there picking vegetables (sounds like a "real" gardener doesn't it?) one afternoon, I notice a couple of those green tomatoes getting large enough to eat...as in FRIED GREEN TOMATOES!

Now, there are certain foods that one would consider "southern"...and most of them are fried; fried chicken, fried okra, fried eggplant,  and of course, fried green tomatoes.  So, naturally when I saw those large, green tomatoes, I knew that I had to made some to go with dinner one evening.

                                                       Start with some green tomatoes.
Slice them, but not too thin.
Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper.

Next, you will need to pour about an inch of oil in a pot and heat it up.  While it is heating, prepare your mixtures for coating the tomatoes for frying...
First, put some flour in a container and coat both sides of the tomato with flour.
Next, whisk two eggs together with 1/2 cup of milk.  Take the tomato out of the flour and coat it with the egg mixture, making sure to get it completely wet.
Finally, you will make another mixture of 1/2/ cup cornmeal and 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs.  Take the tomato out of the milk and coat both sides with this mixture and then place in heated oil.  Turn once during the frying, until golden brown.
Take them out and place them on a paper towel to soak up the excess oil.  Sprinkle lightly with salt and enjoy!
                                                     Ahhh...I just love summer dinners!
